FAQs

Why GoodBoy and not another trainer?

We know there are many good trainers out there, and we’re glad you’re considering professional help for your dog. What makes GoodBoy different is our specialisation in behaviour therapy and aggression cases (areas many trainers won’t touch), our positive reinforcement methods, and our commitment to coaching owners as well as dogs.

Our goal isn’t to compete with every trainer in Victoria — it’s to give your family the tools and support you need for real, lasting change. If we’re not the right fit, we’ll always encourage you to keep seeking the trainer who is..

What kind of training methods do you use?

All of our programs are built on positive, science-backed behaviour therapy. We use reward-based methods tailored to your dog’s individual needs. In your first session, we’ll assess your dog’s behaviour and environment so we can match the right training plan to your family.

No harsh tools. No intimidation. Just proven, humane methods that create results you can trust.

Will you train my dog to bite on command?

No. We will not train dogs to bite humans under any circumstances. Even police and military dogs with years of training have a history of misreading situations. Training a family dog to bite creates unnecessary risk.

If you’d like a protective dog, we can train them to alert you to strangers and act the part of a deterrent — without putting anyone in danger.

Do you come to my home, or do I bring my dog to you?

All of our lessons are done in your home or in real-world settings like local parks or walking routes. This allows us to work on the behaviours where they actually happen, rather than in a classroom environment.

Do you charge extra for more than one dog?

No. We never charge extra for multiple dogs in the same household. If you have two puppies under 8 months, they’ll both be included in our Foundation Puppy Training program. If you have a puppy and an older dog, training will be included under our Behaviour Modification program.

What areas do you service?

We are based in Geelong and service the Surf Coast and Greater Victoria region. If you’re unsure whether we cover your area, just get in touch and we’ll confirm.

I’ve always used prong collars, choke chains, or punishment. Why should I change?

We understand those methods are common, but at GoodBoy we use positive reinforcement because it works faster, lasts longer, and strengthens the bond between you and your dog.

Dogs trained with reward-based methods are not only well-behaved — they’re happy and eager to learn, which means better long-term results without fear or pain.

Can older dogs still be trained?

Absolutely! The saying “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is outdated. With the right approach, dogs of any age can learn, improve, and thrive.

Do you offer refunds for lessons?

All payments for lessons are non-refundable. However, we understand life happens. While refunds aren’t standard, we may consider exceptions on a case-by-case basis. Please reach out if you believe your situation warrants special consideration.

Can you guarantee my dog will be fully trained in a set time?

No reputable trainer can guarantee a dog will be “fully trained” in a fixed time. Every dog learns at their own pace, depending on history, consistency, and environment.

What we do guarantee is that we’ll provide you with the tools, strategies, and coaching needed to make real progress. With commitment and practice, you’ll see meaningful, lasting results.

What is your cancellation policy?

  • Please give 24+ hours notice to cancel.

  • Cancellations with less than 24 hours’ notice incur a $25 fee, payable before your next session.

  • If you’ve purchased a package, late cancellations will count as a used session.

  • No-call/no-shows or cancellations within 2 hours of the appointment require full payment before training continues.

Do you work with all breeds and sizes?

Yes — we work with all breeds and all sizes, from Chihuahuas to Great Danes. We also specialise in large and powerful breeds, which some trainers will not take on.

Do you offer virtual lessons?

Yes! We offer live online coaching via Zoom or Google Meet. This is ideal for families outside of our service area or those who prefer remote training. Virtual lessons are interactive, tailored, and include follow-up support.
